Island Swimming's Competitive Swim Programs
Island Swimming’s Competitive Program is one of the best in Canada and we have the results to prove it. Our partnership with the Victoria Academy of Swimming put 8 athletes on Canada's 2012 Olympic & Paralympic swim team.
At Island Swimming, we place athletes in appropriate training groups for their age and skill level. We take pride in the fact that many of our swimmers move on to University with full Scholarships.

Dynamo (D) ~ 10 & Under
This program is for graduates of Island Swim Skills Gold, or an equivalent level of experience, age 10 or younger as at October 1, 2013. Dynamo swimmers are ready for more challenge as they continue to learn the fundamentals of swimming and are encouraged to compete at Club and Regional swim meets. Dynamo swimmers take part in 4 weekly swimming sessions and will also have up to 2 weekly dryland fitness sessions. The goal of the Dynamo swimmer is to move into the Crush Entry or Crush groups depending upon their age, performance standards they achieve and coach’s recommendation. The Dynamo program runs from Mid September until the end of June.
N.B. Any athlete that hasn’t come through the ISS program will need to be assessed by the coaching staff.
Crush Entry (CE) Revised Program ~ 11-12 Years Olds
This program is for swimmers 11 and 12 years old (as at October 1, 2013), with ISS Gold or higher experience, who are working towards completing the skills and standards necessary for entry into the Crush, Provincial 2 or Provincial groups. Movement into these upper groups depends upon age; performance standards achieved and coach’s recommendation. The Crush Entry group will be working on stroke, training and race skills. Members of this group are expected to participate in Club and Regional meets. The Crush Entry group will have 5 practices per week including one Saturday morning practice. In addition to the swimming sessions, the group will have up to 2 weekly dryland fitness sessions. The Crush Entry program runs from Mid September until the end of July.
Crush (C) ~ 12 & Under
The Crush group swims out of Saanich Commonwealth Place and is the beginning of Island Swimming Club’s high performance development program. This Group is open to all swimmers age 12 & under (as at October 1, 2013) who have achieved their Swim BC 11 & under AA time. Crush members compete in Club, Regional and Provincial meets. Swimmers in this group have come from the Dynamo and Crush Entry programs, or other equivalent groups. The Crush Group will have 6 practices per week including two morning practices, one weekday and one Saturday. In addition to the swimming sessions the group will also have up to 3 dryland fitness sessions including yoga. The goal of the Crush swimmer is to progress into Provincial 2 or Provincial groups. The Crush program runs from Mid September until the end of July.
Provincial 2 (P2)~ 13 & 14
The Provincial 2 group swims out of Saanich Commonwealth Place and is made up of competitive swimmers aged 13-14 (as of October 1, 2013), of all ability levels, who are prepared to train 5x per week and to attend Club, Regional and Provincial meets. The Group Schedule will include 2 weekday afternoon practices, 2 weekday morning practices, 1 Saturday morning practice and up to 3 weekly dryland fitness sessions, including yoga. It is expected that Provincial 2 athletes are training to move to the Provincial or Senior 2 groups. The Provincial 2 program runs from Mid September until the end of July.
Provincial (P) ~ 13 & 14
The Provincial Group group swims out of Saanich Commonwealth Place and is for swimmers aged 13-14 (as at October 1, 2013) with AAA times or, who are trending towards AAA times or, who are committed to training a full program of 7 swimming and 3 dryland sessions weekly. Swimmers that age up from 14 to 15 years of age during the swimming season will be considered for move up to the Senior Group if performance, training, commitment and maturity levels are being met that match those required at the Senior level. Please be advised that, in addition to the standards listed above, group movement at this level is at the discretion of the Coaching Staff. The Provincial group will have 7 swim practices per week, including 2 weekday morning practices and one Saturday morning practice, and 3 dryland fitness sessions, including yoga. The Provincial program runs from Mid September until the end of July.
Senior 2 (S2) ~ 15 & Over
The Senior 2 group swims out of Saanich Commonwealth Place and is for competitive swimmers 15 years of age and up (as at October 1, 2013) of all ability levels, prepared to train 5x weekly and compete in Club, Regional and Provincial meets. The practice schedule for the Group will include 1 weekday morning practice, 3 weekday afternoon practices, a Saturday morning practice and up to 3 weekly dryland sessions, including yoga. It is expected that the members of the Senior 2 group are still working hard to join the Senior or Varsity groups. The Senior 2 program runs from Mid September until the end of July.
Senior (S) ~ 15 & Over
This Senior group group swims out of Saanich Commonwealth Place and is for competitive swimmers 15 years of age and up (as at October 1, 2013) with AAA times or above. As well, those swimmers who are trending towards AAA times or, who are committed to training a full program of 9 sessions per week plus 4 dryland sessions, including yoga. Some 14 year olds will be considered for this Group on a part time basis or in the case of a swimmer physically able, technically sound and socially mature enough to handle the training program and/or trending towards senior national times, on a full time basis. Please be advised that, in addition to the standards listed above, group movement into this group is at the discretion of the Coaching Staff. High performance swimmers can also apply to swim part-time or full-time with the Victoria Academy of Swimming. The Senior program runs from Mid September until the end of July.
Youth/(P3) - Revised Program ~ Age 12-19
The Island Swimming Youth/P3 group is available to swimmers age 12 to 19 (as at October 1, 2013) with a swimming/training background, who want to re-enter a competitive swimming program or maintain their swimming technique and fitness while pursuing other sports. Swimmers are encouraged to register as competitive and compete at regional and local competitions; however swimmers still have the option to swim non-competitive. There are 3 sessions weekly and up to 2 dryland sessions for this group. Swimmers in this group are always able to move back into the full competitive stream. The Youth/(P3) program runs from Mid September until the end of June.
Swimmers who have graduated high school, are attending University or College full time, and wish to compete, either in CIS or SNC sanctioned meets, but want to train with Island Swimming instead of the University of Victoria program. The schedule is composed of two hour sessions and most are combined with the Island Swimming Senior group. Some swimmers in this Group may be invited to train with the Victoria Academy of Swimming Group.
Claremont Sports Institute (CSI)
The CSI Aquatics Program is a partnership between Claremont Secondary School and the Victoria Academy of Swimming. The aim of the program is to allow high performance swimmers to train with Swim Canada's Regional Training Center (Victoria Academy of Swimming) at Commonwealth Pool, in concert with pursuing their academic goals at Claremont Secondary. Victoria Academy of Swimming ~ Olympic Level Athletes
The Victoria Academy of Swimming is lead by Olympic and World Team Coach, Randy Bennett and acts as a complimentary counterpart to the National Swim Centre in Vancouver. Here at the Victoria Academy of Swimming, you will find some of Canada’s top Olympic level swimmers Ryan Cochrane, Alec Page, Alexa Komarnycky, Stephanie Horner, Eric Hedlin and Hilary Caldwell training alongside some of Island Swimming’s up and coming, future Olympians.
